Social Skill groups can help!
We offer social skill groups for preschoolers, elementary and high school aged kids. We also offer groups for young adults in college and for those who are not in college.
Our groups teach specific social skills through direct instruction, modeling, and a wide variety of hands on activities. Each individual joins a small group according to language abilities, social functioning, and temperament. Each group meets weekly for 45 minutes followed by a ten minute briefing with the parents.
Requirements for Sessions
Participants are required to commit to a 16 week semester. The fall semester usually runs from the beginning of September thru mid January. The spring semester runs from the end of January thru the end of May. The office is closed for one week during Thanksgiving, for two weeks at winter break, and for one week in the spring.
Intensive Summer Sessions
Social Sports Camp!
Dominique offers weekly "camp" programs where students come every day for 3 hours. The group size is limited to 15 students with an intern and CITs helping to run the games. The camper to counselor ration is 2:1to ensure that each child receives immediate feedback or help as soon as challenges arise. Each day begins in the office where the rules of each game are taught using a variety of visual matierials. The group then brainstorms some of the challenges of playing sports with peers and strategies are presented. The students then go outside and play games such as kickball, soccer, 4 square, football, and dodge ball. The purpose of this experience is to give all the students the opportunity to participate in the games that occur at recess in a positive manner while teaching them how manage the range of emotions that inevitably occur when playing sports with peers. The kids get some coaching on how to manage frustrations during a game and how to play in a way that keeps it fun for the group. Each day the campers are awarded points based on pro-social behaviors that are targeted ahead of time. At the end of each day, each camper cashes in his/her points at the point store. At the end of the week, each camper participates in an award ceremony. In addition, the parents get a debrief of what happened in camp and how to help their chidren mangage some of the emotions that occur when playing competitive games with others. Some of the topics covered include:
How to handle losing a game?
What to do if you're not sure about the rules?
What should you do if you feel a rule is unfair?
When do you join a game?
How do you handle a situation where other players are more skilled than you?
What's the difference between having fun and being overly competitive?
